Martin Damm makes wines in one of the most visually spectacular places in Ribeira Sacra, on the dramatic hillsides gazing over deep cut canyons that define Amandi, a mythic place where the land is considered sacred and wine has been produced for over 2000 years. He treats the aromatic Mencia grape with the delicacy of Pinot Noir, adding a twist of Burgundian intuition to his wines.
The fluid, juicy side of Mencía, Baboza is made from grapes from six parcels of 40-year-old vines in Pombeiras, in the Doade parish. The site is perched on steep schist cliffs reaching right down to the river. The wine was aged for 1 year in old 228 and 350 litre Burgundy barrels.
